Brucite is also known as Brucite Mg(OH)2. Hardness: 2.5. The single crystal is in the form of a thick plate, which is usually a sheet-like aggregate; the fused magnesia brick sometimes becomes a fibrous aggregate called a nemalite or a brucite asbestos. Brucite also often forms the illusion of periclase.
Brucite is mainly used in the following industrial fields:
Extraction of Mg and MgO raw materials: Mg and MgO are extracted from brucite. The content of MgO in the ore is high, and the impurities are low; the decomposition temperature is low; the volatile matter generated during heating is non-toxic and harmless, so Mg and magnesium can be extracted from brucite. Products such as MgO.
Reburned magnesia: mainly used to produce magnesia refractories. Magnesia carbon bricks, magnesia chrome bricks, etc. are required in the modern steel industry. This type of MgO has exceeded 1/2 of its production. The burnt magnesia made from brucite has the advantages of high density (>3.55 g/cm3), high refractoriness (>2800 °C), high chemical inertness and high thermal shock stability.
Light Magnesium Oxide: US, Russia, Canada, and the United Kingdom use chemical methods to extract light MgO from low-grade brucite rock.
Electro-fused periclase: a special product required for high-tech electronic products. The periclite aggregate refined by electrofusion of brucite has high thermal conductivity and good electrical insulation, and the product life is improved by 2 to 3 times.
Chemical pure magnesium reagent: Electrothermal method can be used to extract magnesium metal to prepare chemically pure reagents such as MgCl2, MgSO4 and Mg(NO3)2.
Reinforcing material: Bauxite can be used as a substitute for chrysotile in some areas. Used in medium-grade insulation materials such as microporous calcium silicate and calcium silicate board. The basic formula is: diatomaceous earth, lime slurry, water glass, brucite. The fiber content is 8 to 10%. The product has high whiteness, beautiful appearance and low bulk density.
Flame Retardant: The test of making flame retardant with polypropylene as the matrix shows that the brucite has better flame retardant effect and is an ideal non-toxic, smokeless, non-polluting, high temperature flame retardant. At the same time, it can play a reinforcing effect of the filler.
Paper-making filler: Brucite has high whiteness, good peeling property, strong adhesion and poor water absorption. By combining it with calcite as a papermaking filler, the papermaking process can be changed from an acid method to an alkali method, and the contamination of the slurry water can be reduced.
Crafts: The dense block of brucite is rich in color, uniform in texture, good in transparency, delicate and smooth; often forms natural stripes and natural patterns with other minerals or varieties, and has ornamental value. Therefore, it can be carved into crafts.
